Mircroblogging is definitely a new age tool that can have many benefits but also some challenges and disadvantages. I am a big user of Facebook and Twitter, and have dabbled into Linked In. In regards to building, developing and engaging your personal network, these microblogs can be incredibly resourceful. Just about everyone gets home after meeting a new person for the first time and looks them up on Facebook to become 'friends.' It is a great way to communicate and get in touch with old friends that you may have not seen in years, or to create a surprise birthday party for your best friend with out them ever knowing about it. At the same time, a disadvantage for personal use is having some people that you may not want to have contact with find you, or there can be oversharing-- somethings you just don't want your grandma to see.
In a professional setting, microblogs can be equally as beneficial as in a personal setting. The networking that they can provide is unbelievable compared to where networking was ten years ago. Meetings can be scheduled, advertising can be done to an audience of millions, all just by the click of a button. Twitter is a great resource for instant news and links to get more information of what you are looking for. These microblogs also give the opportunity for companies to reach out to their customers, analyze their needs and what they want improved in their services.
