Unit 8 Blog Post!

Social media has a very large impact on reputations and careers, some for good and unfortunately some for the bad.  If people do not use social media professional or at least keep private the things that they would not like advertised to the world, it can have incredibly damaging effects on a career and/or reputation. I would like to focus on the good impact of course, specifically how social media can benefit the career of a personal trainer. You wouldn't think a computer would be able to be a gym of sorts, but it definitely can! A trainer can use social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and blogging to do all sorts of things:
  • Provide daily inspiration to their clients
  • Showcase a daily workout
  • Answer questions from clients quickly and easily
  • Show before and after pictures of all of their successes
  • Get feedback and assistance from other trainers
  • Network and advertise
The ability to show videos and podcasts are equally as important in social media. This will help the career of a personal trainer incredibly. Not only can they upload videos of themselves showing how to do workouts with proper technique, their clients can send in their own workouts to get the approval of the trainer that they are doing the workout correctly. It is a great way to get in-home, personal training.
Sharing the podcasts online can definitely take the trainer to a whole new level. They can use those outlets like Twitter and Facebook to their advantage to show their videos.
Twitter-send quick links, tweet the videos to their followers—go into more detail.
Facebook-post the podcast to their own pages and to their clients pages—go into more detail.

Podcasting to a new level!

I found an excellent how-to guide to podcasting on the blog site called BlogWorld. It is a site dedicated to New Media and Social Media Education, News and Events. The post is located here:

http://www.blogworld.com/2011/09/14/a-beginners-guide-to-podcasting-basics/

I really like how descriptive the article is and detailed on how to do a podcast. It also really helps having the links that are provided within the article to other helpful posts. For example, there is a link to other posts within the site that are on the topic of podcasting, and there is another to the Google search results for a Podcast Directory, and gives lots of examples of podcasts.

I also found a really good free podcasting hosting service on the site blip.tv. It can be found here:

http://blip.tv/

The first thing I like about this site is obviously because it is free. I really like the layout as well and how simple it is to use. The homepage showcases podcast subscriptions that are frequently visited, and it was very easy to find where to sign up for an account. You can also log in via Facebook to subscribe to web series on the site. It was very easy to sign up for an account, and the site gives a great welcome tour to show you how to use the site. It also offers the ability to offer advertising on your posts, and the site splits the profits 50/50. This would be appealing to someone dedicated to really getting a frequent podcast started.

Podcasting!

Podcasts should definitely be very planned out and organized in advanced to be successful and productive. An audience will be attracted if the podcast is planned enough in advance that it is publicized and advertised on the site and on others to draw in not only the current audience but new followers as well. The selected audience for my blog is those looking for advice on losing weight and that want to follow my progress. The blog is linked not only to my social media sites but to others that are doing the same type of thing.  The topic for my podcast will include questions that I have received during my progress that I can answer and demonstrate at the same time. The target audience for my podcast will be those looking for more ideas on workouts and healthy eating habits.

I have chosen the option to discuss social media, describing how individuals can use these digital tools to advance their careers or reputations for my podcast script, focusing on how they can improve their reputation fitness-wise and how trainers can be better in their career.

Facebook

New Facebook account: KaraJane Studento

To set up this account, I was asked to provide the following to sign up: Name, Email Address, Gender, and Birthdate. I thought it was interesting that when I first tried to use the last name 'Student' it told me I needed to do a facebook page instead of a profile. I changed it to 'Studento' and it worked for a profile. The next step was to import my email list to find friends, and then found friends through my college.

The providing of the things I 'like' and my school connected me with others that have the same interests and that I attend classes with. This is very helpful when you are trying to find answers to questions for school or need advice. Finding others that have the same interests as you is also fun and a way to find others with the same topic. At the same time though, it can be scary if the information falls into the wrong hands even if they are in your network since there are so many online predators out there. I am definitely more concerned about privacy than anything else, there is no reason that the entire world needs to have access to someone's private information and things that they do not want to share, no matter how far in technology we have come.

Personal Diary-blogging!

I have a couple accounts that are public. My twitter-- @karajaneworkman and my blog that I have posted about previously-- http://karaskander.blogspot.com/

My blog is focused around weight loss and my 2011 journey of losing 100 pounds. I think blogging is an absolutely wonderful technology, not only for the audience but for the author themselves. It is a wonderful outlet, and I am so glad that I decided to do it at the beginning of the year.

I absolutely love Twitter, and it is connected to my blog. Unlike Facebook or similar sites, Twitter limits the characters that you can use, and trends to keep things nice and simple, it is their trademark. It is a quick and easy way to get and give quick bits of information, and provide links to the details. I feel good when I can share that I am currently at Gold's Gym and my grandma can write me and tell me to go that extra mile on the treadmill:) Technology is a beautiful thing.

Microblogging!

Mircroblogging is definitely a new age tool that can have many benefits but also some challenges and disadvantages. I am a big user of Facebook and Twitter, and have dabbled into Linked In. In regards to building, developing and engaging your personal network, these microblogs can be incredibly resourceful. Just about everyone gets home after meeting a new person for the first time and looks them up on Facebook to become 'friends.' It is a great way to communicate and get in touch with old friends that you may have not seen in years, or to create a surprise birthday party for your best friend with out them ever knowing about it. At the same time, a disadvantage for personal use is having some people that you may not want to have contact with find you, or there can be oversharing-- somethings you just don't want your grandma to see.

In a professional setting, microblogs can be equally as beneficial as in a personal setting. The networking that they can provide is unbelievable compared to where networking was ten years ago. Meetings can be scheduled, advertising can be done to an audience of millions, all just by the click of a button. Twitter is a great resource for instant news and links to get more information of what you are looking for. These microblogs also give the opportunity for companies to reach out to their customers, analyze their needs and what they want improved in their services.
